Holy mother of God... Ash is a Bird Trainer! I was just thinking about it, and he's got a lot of evidence pointing towards it.
Hear me out here:
- He has caught and fully evolved EACH of the region's normal/flying birds
- each of his birds has been pretty powerful on his team
- his only shiny was a Noctowl
- both Gligar and Caterpie made it to their fully evolved forms: Gliscor and Butterfree respectively. After evolving them to full, he eventually ditched them for different reasons (but we all know it's because they weren't actual birds).
- He's got his Charizard, which is kinda considered to be one of his most powerful pokes (even though it's had it's ass handed to it on numerous occasions)

I think that when Ash set out on his adventure and saw Ho-Oh flying across the rainbow in the first episode, he was so enthralled by the mysterious pokemon he had just seen that he decided in his mind to become a "bird keeper".
I just thought it was interesting. Thoughts?
