It's an institution at this point to hate old gens, going all the way back to gen2. It's clockwork, trash the old gens while praising the new with each new installment. It's only that gens 6 & 7 ended up being shitty and dumbed down that there's any dissent in the ranks on that.
This is still the only fanbase that hates literally everything that came before because it isn't as mechanically advanced as what has come out later and it hasn't made a damn bit of sense in 20 years.
You want an argument? The old games are still fun to play. The newer ones aren't. D/P are so interminably slow and poorly executed that it's literally a chore to play them and Pt could only do so much to fix that. BW/BW2 so ridiculously linear, drab, and prosaic that there's effectively nothing to gain going through them more than once. XY, SM, and USUM are colorful, vibrant and interesting; but also relentlessly simplified and hand-holdy that they end up fun vampires sucking any sense of enjoyment away.
Sure, the old games are incompetent messes with few redeeming qualities, no good stories, and inferior mechanics; but they're still fun in a way that the newer games simply aren't.
