>How Good Are The Regional Selections?
Another way we could analyze the quality of the Galar dex is comparing how *well curated* the Pokemon selection is. As opposed to looking at the raw number of favorites, here we’ll look at how the quality of the samples chosen compare to the whole generation.
Several posters have noticed that Gen 5 is overrepresented, and the data bears this out. It’s not just a matter of numbers - Gen 5 is proportionally more represented than the other gens. Keep that in mind for the second and third graph. Surprisingly, Gen 1 is not all that overrepresented in the Galar mix; the generations that were represented don’t correspond well to the distribution of favorites in this dataset in general. However, comparing the mean and median favorites considering all Pokemon in the generation with the Galar set only, it seems Game Freak ended up with a balanced approach in each generation. Gen 1 is the clear exception, since, well, Gen 1 has a lot of crowdpleasers; that spike in the mean chart is due to Pokemon like Charizard and Gengar that have over 1000 favorites. Gen 6 in particular is slightly better curated as well. The biggest disappointment is Gen 5: it has the most Pokemon of any returning generation, but zero improvement in its quality.
I think it’s in these graphs where you can see the impact of their more controversial choices, like excluding all starters except for Charizard and pulling in shitmons like Delibird, Qwilfish, and Basculin. For better or worse, Game Freak wanted a Pokemon distribution similar to previous regional dexes where space was not at a premium.
