>>35117485This drives me nuts because old pokemon had story, it was just very passively presented and it was more optional whether or not you had to give a fuck in order to play the game. The best way I can think of illustrating this is the plot of gen 1 PokeSpe. It's adapted from the games (taking things like Fuji/Team Rocket's creation of Mewtwo/Blaine all being vaguely related ingame and explicitly connecting them) but expanded to be given more depth.
I don't mind story - I'll get shit for this, but I love what story there was in gen 1, actually - but no one in their right mind wants to be handheld through over 9000 hours of shit cutscenes that painfully slow down gameplay to hear about forced companion characters nobody asked for. One of the great things about pokemon as an RPG is the ability to choose your party from hundreds of monsters - the idea that the kind of players who are drawn to that level of party customization and options would love Nintendo's abysmally executed attempt at """deeper storytelling""" in gen 7 blows my mind.
