I'm impressed with GameFreak. At least, early GameFreak.
I didn't realize until now that pretty much everything they do is with a purpose. For example the pokemart in viridian city. First pokemart in the game, what can you buy? potion, pokeball, antidote, parlyz heal. why nothing else? because those items are all you need for the upcoming routes. antidote and parlyz heal deals with poison from weedle and paralysis from pikachu. potion heals you and pokeballs capture pokemon. there's no reason to put burn heal or something like that because you can't even be burned by anything until later in the game.
another example, so as far as I know you can't get a single repel before or in the viridian forest. why? because they want players to get forced wild encounters. but why? because they need the experience, and it gives them a chance to maybe find a pikachu or something interesting like that that they otherwise would miss if they used a repel. also prevents an issue where some clueless bastard skips all optional trainers and buys repels and goes to challenge brock with their lv. 8 charmander and gets wiped and ragequits.
god damn all these little things they do i never realized it until today but it was all with a purpose. kudos, old gamefreak. you fuckers knew what you were doing.
