BP was actually not banned by Smogon for a long time until one guy came along and made an unbeatable team. Well, technically unbeatable because you could win if you got a lucky crit at the right time, but even teams dedicated to countering it using shitmons like Taunt Prankster Murkrow would lose 9/10 times. They even tried to make complex ban after complex ban to keep Baton Pass legal, but nothing they did really kept it balanced and it had to be banned outright.
