In my headcanon, the only kids who get classic starters & computer Pokedexes are either rich, get above perfect scores on their Pokemon Trainer License exam, or have a professor as their literal next door neighbor. My parents couldn't afford for me to get one of the typical starters, so I was just given five Poke Balls & a paperback Pokedex. Pic related.
