I always thought the character was supposed to be of an ambiguous gender to add bullshit "mystery" and "intrigue" to the character (author). I don't read the comics on a regular basis or visit the page, so I didn't know the character was named (and gendered), but it wouldn't surprise me if there was nothing concrete one way or another in the beginning. Probably "came out" as a female when her boyfriend validated her existence.
