When it was airing /padt/ was extremely lively and people were actually discussing the anime and hyped for the next episodes, particularly when Z started and it had a lot less filler. The league was actually hyped here, hence the infamous "kalos league champion" thread. Most people won't seriously argue it wasn't the anime at its peak (for the reasons you stated), its only real competition as far as quality goes is DP.
But the thing is, this is 4chan, and a combination of wanting to bait and/or to show how special you are that you don't like this popular thing thrive here.
