Hoenn at least added different stuff through routes to add variety. The others are always changing. The map design of SM is pretty eh, but what Gen 1 did was putting every single item behind a cut tree or strength. That's also not a good map design. A good map design is like Hoenn, where everything is kind of connected and Sinnoh - that grants a more diversity (even though the snow routes were fucking boring - but it could be corrected). BW2 has diversity, but its damn linear, I get that. However, my point is that the lack of variety of viable options for a game about monster collection and battling is vital for its replayability. Even though BW2 map, for example, sucks, you even have many many options to choose and change the "combination" of choices for your walkthrough, something the first gen lacks A LOT.
