It was the most shounen series yet for a franchise that literally screams shounen, with characters that grow stronger through training and battle, a hierarchical system of not only stronger trainers but stronger Pokemon and mysterious lore and legendary events that go beyond the "normal". If you don't like XYZ for following through with these then you never understood what Pokemon was truly about in the first place. No, you don't need to like the anime, but you're strongly mistaken if what you think it did is somehow a misdirection for the franchise.
