Let's say you play 2 hearts, in the first one you get 1200 and in the other you fail and get none. That averages 600 coins per heart which is the same amount as the "safe" strat, however if you don't fail that second heart you actually get 800, 900, 1200 or up to 3000+ that heart you actually got more.
Unless you're actually failing the stage a lot in which case forget everything and go safe. Better have more coins than none.
