The 3D era is a bit more messy. Kalos is not a good region, you'd only really return to gen 6 for megas which are post game anyway. The game is largely designed like a 2D game but it doesn't work well with 3D assets. Then there are times it tries to change up the camera and it just sucks. Plus 90% of the praise they get is online features which are dead now. ORAS is a mixed bag of a remake where many will say just play emerald. It was already kind of irrelevant and its modernisation is already outdated now. SM probably have the strongest footing of the 3D era, it has problems but as a route based game it actually feels realised as a 3D space. Its not XY's awkward half step, but also not what would come after. Being the most story focused is also unique even if I dislike it doing so.
SWSH is the truly irrelevant game though. It has bad routes, and a half baked open world. SV really does supplant the one interesting feature while building on all the little QoL stuff. So most of the 3D era is a bad middle ground, with one controversial game that can at least stand on its own.
