I tend to appreciate Digimon more. The characte typically came from real-world Japan and had relatable backgrounds. Trouble at school, conflicts within the family, lost loved ones, etc. The Digimon adventure was often used like a catalyst for them to grow in some way. And eventually, their stories had to end. Making way for another generation. I think it was a pretty respectable show.
(Xros Wars is super toyetic, though. It's kinda fun for the spectacle, but doesn't have the substance of its predecessors...)
Pokemon though, for a long time has just felt cynical. The Kalos League fallout is a hilarious illustration of how fed up people are with that after 20 years.
