There's alot of good information here and I'm very appreciative. I think that I managed to fix my design! I looked at what I was drawing and the existing bird starters and I realized I was doing too much.
Starters are supposed to be round, cute and simple.
Mine isn't.
So I restarted.
I made a cute little bird and gave him some green feathers on his chest that resemble a vest. Even has a cute little button. I kept the star-shaped tailfeathers. I liked that. I'm playing around with wing shape; my initial design was just oak leaves, but I don't think it works. I came up with a couple options, I think I'm going to go with the 3rd one, I like the simple swoop. Also playing around with oak leaf hair.
But I think this is a very big improvement over my initial concept.
