In Star Ocean 3 your mana was basically your HP bar so I can see it work, in Naruto you're supposed to die too when your chakra reachs zero iirc (lmao) but in most RPG having empty mana makes you go for physical attacks.

Anyways type aura does sound attractive and like a good limiter
