If I may continue my rant, then, since seeing this thread made me happy this morning, Persian is also interesting because it is a jarring, yet fitting and satisfying, evolution of Meowth. Meowth is very much a Pokemon, it's iconic.
Persian might look like mother's own puma but, like Meowth, it's a stylized design of an already stylized cat, the maneki-neko. Meowth goes from a cheery charm of wealth found in shop windows to an imposing, statuesque cat unlike the bronze lions that sit outside palaces. It even has a jewel.
In its old design especially Persian is very simplified and rounded, with shapes so distinctive a child could memorize its iconic pose. It's actually rather idiosyncratic of Gen 1 design.
Newer Persian is redone to be more realistic in its proportions. For some reason its design got one of the bigger overhauls. Alolan Persian might seem charming because it's a bit of a throwback.
