>and why does it need to rest on a sandbag, on a bench?It's called bench-resting, literally resting all the mass of the gun, steadily, so you can focus all your attention on aiming the gun, often taught to kids the first time they shoot a rifle, but it's really just a nifty way of holding the gun steady, it rests sunken into the sandbag, so you don't have to use your arm strength to keep it steady, meaning no sway.

>Why would it be shooting in the first place?For fun and recreation? I think it's pretty fun to put some pellets into old coke-cans and food tins, things like that.
I guess it doesn't need to be on a bench, just any reasonably flat surface, and facing a target of some sort.
