Critique has no skill requirement. If you really want to push the "chef" comparison ad nauseum you don't need to know how to prepare a 5 star meal to know if food tastes horrible to you. You do, however, need to know more than nothing about the inner workings of high-class food preparation if you want to give the chef actual feedback or help them in any way. "This food sucks" isn't critique, it's just an insult. An insult which is often unnecessary; it's not constructive in any way, it's just negativity.
That isn't to say you should force it into your gut and tell the chef you love it, otherwise the next meal you try will be just as bad. You needn't be afraid to give negative feedback, the key is to just not be a dick while doing so. Telling an artist you don't like something will bring it to their attention, telling them WHY will help them grow and overcome it. Unless you're facing some gargantuan ego, most often the point can be made simply with an "X looks wrong to me, maybe if you tried Y?". People will be less inclined to attempt to disregard you if you're nice.
What people forget is that what you find disgusting may be a delicacy to someone else. This is why "shit" should never be used to describe another's work. If you don't like it, great, if you want to make a suggestion, go for it, but not everyone will respond positively if you try to ram it down their throat. Should such a case occur, just move on
