Either your team is able to beat it and you win, or it isn't and you lose. The player should mostly lose battles because of bad decisions when battling, not outside of battle.
A proper hard boss battle should be against a trainer with a team of 6 and a decent AI. If gamefreak just allowed the AI to at least switch their pokemon when in notable disadvantage, it would already be a giant improvement over what we have now.
Totem battles were easier than necrozma, because you easily ended up having strong mons against them on your team, but were still cooler. At least in 1v3 you had some room to strategize, and could take many different approaches when defeating them, if you didn't have a pokemon that was strong against them.
