HGSS is definitely missing some aspects of Crystal that made the Gen 2 experience better, but overall HGSS with the improvements and updated nature was still a kickass experience and added new things that built upon the foundation of Gen 2 without losing it's identity, like adding on to the Phone with the Gym Rematches and still keeping this daily/weekly event themeing to keep coming back.
It's also why Platinum is still superior to BDSP, the remakes didn't really do much to justify a lot of what it's lacking, despite cool features like the HM calls and the underground expansion. This is more because Platinum fixed a lot of issues that held DP back whereas BDSP is stuck with DP's problems with modern updates.
Compare this to ORAS, now that's a game that a lot of people still can't figure out, Emerald is still a somewhat better game, but at the very least ORAS does enough, with changing the timeline, overall revamp designs and features that worked due to the modernization that it can at least stand as a decent game cause the effort was still there.
