If you played the original gameboy game then it won't be hard to jump into Live or the upcoming Pocket.
>Are the older cards still even used?Pokemon rotates sets each year so only the newest stuff is playable. Old cards would just be powercrept out of the meta anyway except for a few broken trainer cards.
