What they're doing instead is a Pokemon themed Ninja Gaiden with Greninja as protagonist. It adds more RPG elements like being able to level up to learn new moves which can be used to adopt different playstyles, like using Extrasensory to mess with enimes mids and make them attack each other if you prefer more strategic approaches instead of a hack and slash approach to some "assasination" missions. You have Protean and it becomes manifest in the different kinds of elemental Ninpo that you can learn; you can use these to your advantage to switch typings on-the-fly and cause more damage based on the Typing of the enemies you encounter, but it can be a disadvantage when handling many types of opponents at the same time, since these can also exploit your typing weaknesses. Obviously it's handled in a more light-hearted way, but it has pretty deep gameplay, regardless of a shallow, mostly predictable story.
