I try to always use pokemon I've never used before for every playthrough, and in new gens I try to use as many new pokemon as possible.
I really liked BW for this, they gave me a lot of pokemon that I can clearly call as my favourites that aren't legendaries. I hope XY can do the same, I'm planning all Kalos exclusive mon runs.
