Our immediate internal response to this is "oh, there's something very wrong here," because historically such an appearance has been when people are really sick, or addicted to meth if your definition of history only goes back 60 years.
THAT'S the Uncanny Valley. A survival mechanism we made that lets us go "oh shit, something's very much not right with that individual." It lets us avoid sick humans, and prevent us from eating horribly sick animals which may be rotting, like deer with CWD.
Yes, the design is shit, and it's really not an excuse to hide behind things. However, they also aren't wrong that it's triggering the survival mechanism meant to detect when something is horribly wrong with animals(or humans.)
