Rival's team is done. I haven't thought of a personality of backstory for the guy but I thought of how Gary would always sort of have/get things that would one up Ash and made his team be mostly pokemon that are higher tier than the ones I'm using or have them be different versions of the same pokemon (like with Lycanroc). He uses the same team he had from Kanto in Johto then makes a triumphant return to Sinnoh with his Magmar evolving into a Magmortar showing the growth and experience he's had in his previous adventures. He shows up in Alola because he just so happened to take a vacation there.
