I think a lot of Sinnoh's appeal was being the first to do a lot of what it did. The physical/special attack split, held items exploding into their own, online trade and battle, an evil team up Magma and Aqua's ante, Pokemon transferring making a big web of games between the GBA, Gamecube, and DS that could suddenly net you a load of strong past Pokemon, etc. But once it is no longer the game in town with those things it loses that luster.
