We only need to look at their visible morphology and place it with its best match.
The people in this thread already do it, they even realize it.
They look at an eevee or an espeon or a vaporeon, they look at its parts and then place that with the best match in their memory
For some is a cat, for others it a dog, or a minority is just a fish. Point is they aren't really thinking about enviroment, adapation, or function. Pretty much just form which is why I focus only on morphology it gives you the best match.
