Your mind just does funny things trying to rationalize the earlier ones as older, but they're all generally 11~14 at the oldest. XY being the sole major exception along with a small handful of borderline cases
People are just upset right now because they literally put the protagonists in elementary school uniforms with backpacks, which makes it harder to rationalize them as older like they usually try to do in their head. The result is frustration like something is being taken away, but it's actually nothing new.
