Anyway, I opt for knifecat finding thieves as trainers in my fic. Their other friends are less criminal, some to the point of being lawful. Keeps things interesting. Buizel and Roselia so far. Trainers are more complex, their involvement in the plot coincides with my desire to bring different walks of life together on an adventure. Basically if they're all crooks it would be less fun.
To answer your question, why not a 'mon you'd never expect to be a killer? It probably wouldn't be overdone and anything that seems harmless would raise less attention on a murder spree. Extra points if the killer is covert.
