I don't know how explain my taste, but I will try this.

I love when a design make me smile for some reason. Sometimes is because the Pokémon is comfy to see but isn't a blatant cutemon (ie Torterra, Aggron). Or when the Pokémon has a funny design with a funny personality (Gengar and Probopass fits here imo). Also, I love artifactmons (or similar) with weird designs like Cofagrigus, Dhelmise and Sigilyph.

All Pokémon that made me smile the first time I saw them were in my team at least once.

In summary, funnymons and artifactmons.

It would've been acceptable to me if they kept the eyes and went all in on making it taller, by which I mean scale the mini-noses and main nose to fit, but they half assed the job and didn't bother to do research on why the eyes tie into the easter island theme they "tried" to expand on and think they just made one of the worst designs in the series instantly better because nothing else matters except muh eyes muh stache. Like I said, many other designs here were ruined much worse. That Piloswine hurts for example. It pissed me off so much because people think Probopass was supposed to be something that wasn't goofy and therefore it's trash and the half-assed job of this redesign embodies that to me.

If you hate a tribal statue because it looks as a tribal statue, then you are answering the thread question. Not all Pokémon were designed to be shillmons, you know, and Probopass proved its design is not just a weird olmec with random details: it already proved how it can be a nice Pokémon in anime animations and TCG artworks. It has its own charm, even if it looks "stupid" because you cannot understand there's more than dragons and waifus in this world.
