If she returns alongside her partner they could've easily fought off Fezandipiti and Okidogi. If her partner took 5 more minutes before returning by himself he would have been fine, then they can get the masks back. Even if everything went down the same but without the villagers around she could've at least extracted her revenge with no repercussions. Instead she gets her life turned around in a series of misfortunes that make no sense just like life itself and that's what makes her so sympathetic.
