I didn't get R/S/E because I didn't like it. I didn't like the starters and I didn't like the appeal, I stopped watching the anime like right around that time too. Only watched like the first 6 episodes of the Advanced series, and then dropped it.
Didn't buy FR/LG, and instead I kind of just ignored Pokemon altogether. Later I saw D/P screenshots right up to its release, and for some reason, I had the urge to replay Pokemon again. The last one I had played was Silver on the GB. (And Pokemon XD, if you can count that one. So I knew some of the Gen 3 Pokemon. I got XD through a bundle.) I bought D/P and enjoyed it, it completely got me back into playing Pkmn again. Bought ever iteration after that. I even started rewatching the anime from the start of D/P all the way to the end.
