Grandma bought be a gameboy and red to shut me up on long car rides. I ended up talking about the pokémon instead of just whatever. I was fucking amazed. It was my first game and the first time I ever saw anything moving on a screen that wasn't just shows on tv. I think what really kept my interest past the point where it wasn't cool to like pokemon anymore was that I didn't have very many friends, and my home life was pretty rough. I just quietly played my GBC with Crystal until my family finally saved up enough money to get me the GBA and Ruby. Like two years after release. We really didn't spend much money like that, but I didn't complain. I just really liked the world they painted. I liked being able to find something nice whenever I was bored, even if it got a little familiar after a while.
I don't think that I could ever leave because they "killed the franchise" or anything. Every gen has something I really like.
