I find that this happened to a lot of things in Pokemon once it branched out to have online. I remember during the GSC days having to rely solely on local trading to get everything, and it made it much more rewarding. I really can't motivate myself to play past the main campaign in the new games because there is no challenge to going online and getting every Pokemon I could ever want through a simple list. Another thing is that I lost interest in getting shinies once there was a way to increase the chances of an encounter with one of them. Kind of destroys the whole point of them, IMO.
