For your run-of-the-mill pokemon, that's it. That's the limit of their ability to control fighting-type energy. Skilled punches and kicks can be learned with some practice, forming that energy into a literal ball is another thing entirely.
For most pokemon, the kind of advanced control that is required for Aura Sphere is just impossible.
