>>46120313I've designed artwork for three cabinets. My plan is to have them emulate every Pokemon game on the Gameboy and Gameboy Color, and maybe Gameboy Advance, but as the centerpiece I want a ROM hack of FireRed that could serve as a definitive single player Kanto experience, something I could keep going back to in a way I just can't with the Gameboy originals.
The core ideas are pretty basic: The original 151 Pokemon only, all of which can be caught or evolved in game legitimately without trading or cheating, the battle system from Gen IV, the removal of the Sevii Islands, Gym Leader and Elite Four rematches with higher levels, maintaining the Pokemon distribution from the Japanese Red, Green and Blue versions (version exclusives are released in the wild after defeating the Elite Four) and some small tweaks for the sake of balance (such as making Ghost-type resist Psychic, so the only Ghost types in the game aren't weak to them - otherwise, the best counter short of another psychic would be Magneton due to its Steel typing).
I'm still thinking of the right way to get Mew and the other two starters. For Mew right now I'm thinking that if you talk to the Pokemon Fan Club Chairman with over 100 Pokemon in your Pokedex (so you have a bigger collection than he does), he recommends you talk to Mr. Fuji. And if you talk to Mr. Fuji with a party full of six Pokemon with high or max friendship, he gives you the Old Sea Map. With the map you can get to Faraway Island where you can catch Mew. For the starters, I'm thinking having the unchosen starter gifted to you if you defeat the Champion with a high enough Pokedex count. And if you get closer to 150, Oak will give you the Rival's starter, saying he was told it hatched from an egg and commenting on how exciting and mysterious that is.
It's not a mindbending super ambitious project, it's just some tweaks for my personal use.
