The internal reasons for the PSS being cut was because GF couldn't be assed to find a better way to reduce server load, resulting in the Festival Plaza. At some point, they redesigned the MCs to be more reflective of the chibi-hybrid artstyle Gen 7 went with rather than the higher quality model Gen 6 had for it's in-battle models.
