They basically moved the game to a pure collectible, releasing "limited" boxes multiple times a year to attract scalpers that eat them up. Pokemon is now going exactly the same way, they've already announced two additional "limited" sets and the "shiny" subset, which used to come out at the end of the generation's lifespan, now appeared at the very beginning. They're chasing the hype and leaving the "game" element behind.
