The whole point was that Alola was region rooted in its culture and didn't want or need anything like a league or elite four, and that just because they didn't work like other regions doesn't mean their region's culture didn't have value, that was the whole fucking point of the Aether Foundation being the villains and Lusamine's character arc, that single minded obession and a belief there can only one way to do things will lead to ruin and destroy everything around you without even realizing it.
There shouldn't have been a league at all, but Ash winning is just the cherry on top.
