I think the reason Samurottards seethe so hard over this design in particular is because it has the common bottom heavy fat Pokemon proportions like Charizard, Typhlosion, Feraligatr, Sceptile, Swampert, Empoleon, etc. So they can’t resort to their usual “you’re just a furfag who wants humanoid mons” defense. Deep down they know this design is objectively better and fits way fucking more with the previous starter progressions than the trash we ended up with.
