A few of them even had to put up a whole act while in front of other black peers to maintain their status. A lot of them just gave up hanging out with most blacks from the area.
It really sucks how common that kind of behavior is, and I never really understood it either. Only middle-class and up can you avoid that kind of peer pressure. I always wondered what drove that kind of mentality, jealously, or just general exclusion, or conflating acting "proper" to whiteness etc.
