Megas were designed to upgrade and redesign familiar Pokemon, similar to a cross-gen evolution. It wasn't even going to be a battle mechanic originally, just another type of normal evolution.

I didn't have a problem with it because I started with Gen 1 and hadn't been as invested. Thought it was cool to see classic Pokemon stuff reimagined in 3D. This game was very deliberately targeted not just at casuals, but at boomers who started during Pokemania and fell out of the series later.

Pokemon Origins is another example.
