I wish people wouldn't call Cyrus and Lysandre terrible, bland villains.
I think Cyrus is actually really poignant and that his team, as an extension of his antagonism is really good. Team Galactic strikes a nice balance between being funny and terrifying and I really appreciate how they don't really understand the depths of Cyrus plan and he has no trouble calling them in incompetent and citing them as good examples as to why his work should be allowed to continue. As opposed to Lysandre with Team Flare he is aware of the fact that Team Galactic is a bunch of hopelessly lost shitheads and doesn't let it bother him.
I also think his nihilism is really cool, well-executed, and a fine starting point for serious conversations about people and the world. It strikes a nice balance between making you think and being children-safe content. I think DPPt are great games for kids, especially kids who like to read.
Lysandre isn't as well-executed as Cyrus, but I don't think his ambitions are inherently bad from a writing perspective. He is much more selective than Cyrus and I think that makes him a much more vile human being. He's really evil, and I wish this would have been highlighted better. There was some potential in a story about disposing of such a brutal lunatic but I don't think it was capitalized on well. It's been a long time since I replayed Gen 6 but from what I remember, Lysandre just wasn't being portrayed as the kind of guy he really was. I think Game Freak should have turned their sympathetic villain lens way off with him.
