Personally, I think the "draw from life" advice can be bullshit. That's not the only way to learn, and it's certainly not the EASIEST way to learn. The rules for shading are very basic, but a lot of tutorials make it sound extremely complicated and hard to follow, so here's a quick and simple shading tutorial I made just for you (and the many others who are just told to "draw from life" when they're having trouble).
