This, in my mind, is how anthropomorphing animals into pokemon should work. Just one inspiration, clearly executed, not too much going on, not too little, and with (surprising) character to it.
"anthropomorphised animal" is the point, since it's a fighter in a discipline invented and practiced by humans. It won't work any other way.
