The animated trailers for BW2 were the most hyped this series ever made me, it really felt like they were doing something good with this series.
...XY was a massive flop, however, for my expectations. I didn't like the graphics from the getgo, I thought megas was a dumb way to just rehash old mons, and when I played the game I was just disappointed in how shallow it was. Also, I was disappointed by Greninja after being so hyped from seeing Froakie and Frogadier, which definitely killed my hype for the line.
Conceptually, Sun and Moon seemed like it was way fresher than XY, even if some things were whatever (like regional variants giving them more excuses to half-ass the dex size), but when it actually released, it was so mindblowingly bad that I couldn't finish it and never bought a new game again. Don't regret it.
tl;dr it turned out horribly.
