That's generally how the cycle goes. Especially when it's hinted that he finally snapped and beat his dad back, it suggest he's got poor control over his aggressive tendencies and/or uses violence to cope (bent golf clubs, destroyed furniture in the mansion, etc).
Seeking approval of authority figures is also a way of coping with abuse, i.e. Stockholm Syndrome. So really you could go either way, but the former just seems to make more sense to me.
