The soul is not a buzzword. It's a well-defined concept in game design that relies on expression and thoughtfulness rather than a formulaic approach. The soul is always rough, in a sense, experimental. The soul always goes one step beyond what is necessary, because there is no beaten path for soul. The peak example of soul in old Pokemon games is the psychic type in Red/Blue. Psychic was an interesting concept, but it just didn't fit into the rest of the types. There were too many other options available to players at the time. So, when you see a psychic pokemon, you know it has some sort of special ability or power that makes it stand out from its peers. And while it may be a bit unorthodox, it fits within the spirit of the soul.
