Japan had multiple different metas, some far more open than ours, others more restricted. But, it was comparable to Smogon in terms of how they ranked and separated mons. Some of the rules I remember seeing included:
>Only one legendary/"Strong Pokemon" like Snorlax and Dugtrio per team>Swords Dance wasn't allowed on pokemon with a high BST>Item Clause, sometimes Species Clause>Nothing for evasionI've only seen footage/read logs, and from what I've seen, their metas tended to have lots of variety in terms of mons because of their stringent rules, but ttar was on pretty much every team you'd see.
